Community Awareness and Response

Working with medical and legal communities
SASSMM has worked closely with the medical and legal communities in the past. Collaborations with the medical community have included sexual harassment awareness training for Parkview Hospital, an in-service training for ER staff at Mid Coast Hospital, and a daylong conference in the fall of 1997 entitled, "Sexual Assault - The Health Care Perspective". SASSMM has worked with law enforcement agencies to provide sexual assault awareness training for the Maine Criminal Justice Academy and for the Midcoast Chiefs of Police Training Council.

Sexual Assault Response Team (SART)

The SART Collaborative/Midcoast Region was born out of Project Midcoast Response, which brought together law enforcement, healthcare, DA offices and advocacy to create a working dialogue to ensure quality service for all survivors of sexual violence and their families.  Out of the successful PMR grew the need for a full-time advocate who would work with survivors involved in any stage of the prosecutorial process.  The SART Collaborative with a staff advocate available to survivors at three police departments and two sheriff offices (Brunswick, Bath and Topsham Police Departments, Sagadahoc and Lincoln County Sheriff's Office) in the Midcoast region, is proving to be a survivor-beneficial relationship.

Project Advance

Project Advance is a collaboration of Sexual Assault Support Services of Midcoast Maine (SASSMM), local law enforcement officials, prosecutors and healthcare providers.  Project Advance is a specialized program to help support people with cognitive and developmental disabilities and the elderly with or without cognitive disabilities.  In addition to the development of protocols to better respond to survivors of sexual violence, Project Advance is developing advanced training opportunities, workshop opportunities for parents and guardians and self-advocacy safety materials.

Community Awareness

SASSMM is available to speak religious organizations and other civic groups about SASSMM, our mission, the services we provide and how we carry out our work.

Newsletter

SASSMM publishes a newsletter, "No News", filled with articles on issues of sexual violence, agency updates, and calendars of upcoming events. It also includes the "Your Voice" column, a place where survivors of sexual violence can share their stories.
