Mission & Services

Mission

SASSMM’s mission is to support and advocate for people affected by sexual violence, while working to prevent it in our communities.
We are committed to providing that support to anyone, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, ability, or any other identity.

We support survivors no matter how they want to move forward.
Our services are 100% confidential* and survivor-led. We only work with outside systems- including law enforcement- when a survivor asks us to.

We recognize that for many people, reaching out to an agency for support can feel unsafe.
Our agency has received Safe Space training to help create a welcoming and inclusive space for LGBTQ+ survivors of sexual violence. Our staff also meet regularly to discuss anti-racism within our agency and service area.

Services

We provide the following prevention and response services:
  • A free, private 24-hour Helpline with trained advocates who are understanding and ready to help
*Call 1-800-871-7741 to speak to an advocate now
  • Emotional support to survivors and their families and friends anytime
  • Company for survivors who go to the hospital, police, or court
  • In-person and online peer support groups
  • Information and referrals to different resources
  • Training for local agencies and organizations
  • Community and school-based education

*If we are concerned about a child or dependent adult being neglect or abused, we do have to make a mandated report to DHHS. Once they have that information, they might choose to call the police. We do our best to always let you know if we are making a mandated report. DHHS in Maine does not report to ICE, but some law enforcement agencies do. Please keep this in mind when sharing information with us – you only have to share what you are comfortable with.

Nondiscrimination Policy

Sexual Assault Support Services of Midcoast Maine does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color, religion, sex/gender, national origin, age, disability, sexual orientation and all other characteristics and status in any group protected by city, state and federal laws. This policy applies to all terms and conditions of employment and to the provision of any services offered or provided by the agency.

Office Drop-ins

Please call the State-wide Sexual Assault Helpline to set up a time with an advocate to meet with you in person at one of our offices. Our advocates are not available to the public in SASSMM/CAC office spaces 24/7. We require an advanced notice to ensure that an advocate can be available and present to meet with you to help address your needs.
